The Flow Focusing technology was invented
in 1994 by the researching group of Professor Alfonso Gañán-Calvo
(University of Seville, Spain) and Ingeniatrics has an exclusive
license to exploit most of the patents related to it (see patents). Flow Focusing is a very versatile
microfluidic system based on a combination of a specific geometry
and hydrodynamic forces. The phenomenon is characterized by the
presence of a steady micro-jet which is “sucked” through a small
orifice, and eventually breaks up into well-defined sized droplets
in the micro and nanometric range (see the animation). Depending on the specific configuration of the system and the type of fluids used, it is possible to obtain micro- or nanodrops (when the focused fluid is a simple liquid). When these drops get solidified then micro- and nano- particles or capsules are achieved. And when the focused fluid is a gas, it turns to be micro- and nano- bubbles or foams.
